Cookies defined
Internet, browser and web cookies are just some internet jargon names for the same highly politicized topic of internet privacy. Internet cookies have been oversimplified by some and warned about by others about their huge threat to internet privacy.
Internet cookies are pieces of user data that websites collect and store on your computer. There are two types of internet cookies, non-persistent and persistent cookies.
Non-persistent cookies are bits of information stored by the website only when you are active on the website. These cookies disappear once you close or stop using the website. This data isn't stored for long periods of time. An example of this is when a website remembers what’s in your shopping cart when exploring their site. The information stored is not private information but user information.
Persistent cookies are bits of user information that are stored by a website or web browser for an extended amount of time, months to even years. These types of cookies are used to save your login or password to certain websites.
Third party cookies are primarily used for tracking a users online presence and content consumption and for advertising purposes.
Cookies on Google
Google has tried to improve the privacy of their users while also using cookies to gain ad revenue. Cookies collected by Chrome are used to figure out what their users like, in order to feed them relatable ads and content.
There are many pros and cons to internet cookies and whether their usage is worth the privacy risk.
